Volleyball Squad Defeats UTPA in Four

Edinburg, Texas - Sophomore Tammy Leuer used 11 kills, 10 assists and 18 digs to record her first career triple-double in a four-game TU victory over Texas-Pan American on Monday night. The Hurricane defeated the Lady Broncs 15-8, 15-10, 12-15, 15-12 to improve to 19-13 on the season.
Leuer was one of four Hurricane to record double digits in kills. Senior Kristien Van Lierop led TU with a match-high 17 kills. Juniors Ashley Frogge' and Kara Hidinger also contributed 14 kills apeice. Hidinger led the squad a match-high 21 digs, while Van Lierop added 18 digs as well. In addition to Leuer's 18 digs, senior Shannon Smith recorded 17 digs to go along with her 51 assists.
In each of the first two games, the Broncs hung tight with the Golden Hurricane before dropping the games by 15-8 and 15-10 counts.? However, in the third game, the Broncs came from behind to win the game.? Tulsa took a 10-9 lead before the Lady Broncs took six of the last eight points to win game three 15-12.? Again in game four, UTPA took a late lead at 12-11, but Tulsa reeled off the last four points to win the game, and the match, 15-12.
The Hurricane set the tone early with 20 kills in the first game on a .417 hitting percentage. For the match, Tulsa finished with a .234 percentage with 71 total kills and a season-high 11 service aces.
Mindy Hubik led the way for the Broncs with 15 kills and four blocks.? Winker Cruz and Jaclyn Muszynski both had double-doubles in the match.? Cruz had 14 kills and 15 digs, while Muszynski had 12 kills and 17 digs.? Cynthia Kasper also had 12 kills for the Lady Broncs.?
Tulsa will conclude the 2000 season with a 1 p.m. match against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at the UTPA Fieldhouse. If TU wins, it will mark the first time the Hurricane have won 20 matches in a season since 1980. That season Tulsa finished 30-11.
