Tulsa Women Suffers 63-50 Setback to Duquesne

Tulsa, Oklahoma - Duquesne junior Khalihah Este-Shehu scored a game-high 28 points to lead the Dukes to a 63-50 victory over Tulsa in front of a crowd of 1,423 at the Donald W. Reynolds Center Saturday night.
Tulsa (3-6) received a team-high 18 points from freshman Becky Heidotten. Junior Carla Morrow scored a season-high 16 points and pulled-down a team-best 10 rebounds to record her second career double-double.
DU sophomore Beth Friday also recorded a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds, while senior Jamie Vander Zanden added 14 points for the Dukes.
With the exception of one tie early in the contest, Duquesne (7-4) led from start to finish. Vander Zanden and Este-Shehu powered the Dukes in the first half. Vander Zanden was on 5-of-6 from the field, while Este-Shehu was 6-of-11 for 12 points each. Morrow scored 11 points in the first period to the lead the Hurricane, but Duquesne led 30-22 at the break.
In the second half, Tulsa pulled to with in five points, 30-25, on a three-point basket by senior Athena Pirpich. But Duquesne, using its height advantage, responded with an 18-1 run over next 7:03 to charge out to a commanding 48-26 lead with 12:48 left in the game.
Down by 20 points with 8:35 on the clock, Tulsa put together a 9-0 run to pull to within 11 points. Duquesne then answered the TU run with back-to-back scores. Minutes later, Heidotten nailed consecutive free throws and Tulsa trailed just 54-44 with 2:43 showing on the clock. But turnovers and missed shots thwarted TU of any comeback. The Hurricane failed to break the deficit to single digits and dropped its third home game of the season.
