SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (AP) - Kevin Johnson scored 12 of his 14 points in the first half Tuesday night, and Tulsa held on in the second half to beat Southwest Missouri State 61-55.
It was Southwest Missouri State's first game against Tulsa coach Buzz Peterson, who agreed two years ago to become the Bears' coach but backed out a day later.
Marcus Hill's 15 points led Tulsa (5-2), which trailed 18-11 early in the game but then went on a 17-0 run that gave the Golden Hurricane a 28-18 lead with 5:20 left in the half.
The Bears (3-1) cut Tulsa's lead to 56-53 with 35 seconds left, as Robert Yanders scored five quick points on a basket and a 3-pointer, but the Hurricane went 5-for-6 from the line down the stretch.
Scott Brakebill scored 19 points and grabbed eight rebounds before fouling out to lead Southwest Missouri State. Yanders and Michael Wallace added 13 points each for the Bears.
