TU Women Netters Have Excellent Showing at UH Fall Classic

Tulsa, Oklahoma - The University of Tulsa women's tennis team recorded the best Fall tournament showing under second-year Head Coach Paige McMurray as five Hurricane players reached the finals of their respective flights at the UH Fall Classic in Houston, Texas.

Tulsa senior Monica Poveda ignited the TU players with her 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 upset of Houston's 44th-ranked Galina Seliouina in the second round of the Flight #1 singles on Saturday. The win was Poveda's first career upset of a nationally ranked player. On Sunday, in the finals, Poveda put up a strong battle against UTEP's 53rd-ranked Tanja Magoc before falling in three sets, 6-4, 6-7, 6-2.

Tulsa junior Jennifer DeSpain and sophomore Kerry-Lea Glass each won two matches to advance to the Flight #4 singles final on Sunday, but did not play each other. Senior Sandra Sailer also reached the finals of her respective flight. Sailer fell to New Mexico's Caroline Pollock, 1-6, 6-3, 7-6, in the Flight #5 singles finale.

Sophomore Bianca Posada completed the Flight #2 singles as the third-place winner when she bested Amanda Earhart of Texas Tech, 6-2, 6-4. Sophomore Jana Sedivec and Aleksandra Durska each settled for fifth-place in the Flight #1 and # 3 singles, respectively.

In doubles, DeSpain and Durska advanced to the Flight #1 doubles championship, but came up short to Houston's doubles tandem, 8-1. Posada and Glass finished in fifth-place in the Flight # 2 doubles.
