HOUSTON, Texas – Tulsa women's tennis (14-11) dominated 13-seed East Carolina (4-12) in the first round of the American Women's Tennis Championship on Thursday morning.
With the win, the four-seed Golden Hurricane will face No. 12 South Florida in the quarterfinals. South Florida enters at 6-15 after knocking off five-seed FAU, 4-2, in the opening round.
Tulsa extends its streak of never dropping a first-round match at the American Women's Tennis Championship since joining the conference in 2015.
ECU grabbed the early edge in doubles with a 6-1 win on court two, but Tulsa responded immediately to take the point. Isabella Basson and Maria Santos evened the score with a 6-3 win at No. 1, and Erin McKenzie and Coral Valle matched that 6-3 result to clinch the doubles point.
Tulsa carried that momentum into singles, where the top four spots in the lineup delivered straight-set wins. Carolina Alonso finished first, posting a 6-4, 6-1 win at the No. 3 position. Santos followed with a 6-1, 6-1 victory to push Tulsa's lead to 3-0.
With play continuing to the clinch, two courts finished at nearly the same time to secure a 5-0 victory for Tulsa. Alice Baba earned a 6-3, 6-2 win, and Basson added a 6-0, 6-2 result to cap the sweep of completed matches.
The Golden Hurricane will continue their run tomorrow against No. 12 seed South Florida at 10 a.m.
