Tulsa Advances to American Semifinals with 4-2 Win Over South Florida

HOUSTON, Texas – Tulsa women's tennis (15-11) earned a 4-2 victory over No. 12 seed South Florida (6-16) in Houston on Friday morning, advancing to the semifinals of the American Conference Women's Tennis Championship.

Four-seed Tulsa will face No. 1 seed Wichita State in Saturday's semifinal, set for 10 a.m. CT. Wichita State advanced with a 4-0 win over No. 8 UAB in the quarterfinals.

The Golden Hurricane have reached the semifinals in 11 of their 12 seasons in the American.

Tulsa claimed the doubles point with wins on courts one and three. Erin McKenzie and Coral Valle set the tone with a 6-2 victory, and Isabella Basson and Maria Santos followed with a 6-4 win to secure the point.

South Florida opened singles play with a win, but Tulsa responded quickly. Carolina Alonso put Tulsa back in front with a 6-3, 7-5 victory at No. 3 singles for a 2-1 lead. The Bulls answered to tie the match at 2-2 after Francesca Miglio defeated McKenzie 6-2, 7-6.

Tulsa seized control from there, winning the final two completed matches. Valle delivered a 6-3, 7-5 win at No. 5, and Basson clinched the match with a comeback performance, rallying for a 1-6, 7-5, 6-1 victory.

Basson, a sophomore from Pretoria, South Africa, extended her streaks to four consecutive doubles wins and three straight singles wins while reaching 19 total victories this season.

Tulsa returns to the courts at the George R. Brown Tennis Center on Saturday morning for a semifinal showdown at 10 a.m. CT.
