Tulsa, Okla. - The University of Wisconsin-Green Bay Phoenix won all three of its matches including a 3-0 (30-24, 30-26, 30-28) over host Tulsa in the third annual Dr. Tom Cairns Hurricane Classic in the Donald W. Reynolds Center.
UWGB used a hitting percentage of .241 and 55 kills to hand Tulsa it's first loss of the season. The Phoenix had three players in double-digits in kills as Kaelyn Zaporski recorded a match-high19 kills. Janelle Tomlinson had 15 kills and 10 digs.
A trio of freshmen led the Golden Hurricane as Kristin Bailey recorded 11 kills, Vanessa Thon had 39 assists, and Dana Weddle finished with 15 digs.
The Golden Hurricane bounced back with a three-game victory over Texas-Pan American in the nightcap. Tulsa outhit the Lady Broncs .289 to .170 with a 56-36 advantage in kills.
Freshmen Lindsay Eaves and Kristin Bailey led the way for TU with 14 and 12 kills, respectively. Thon recorded 43 assists while Bailey recorded a match-high 13 digs.
Tulsa finished second in the classic for the second time in the three year history of the classic. The Golden Hurricane won the tournament last year.
TU returns to action next weekend at the College of Charleston Tournament in Lynchburg, Va. The Hurricane's next home match will be October 4th against Boise State.
