Volleyball Team Splits a Pair of Contests in South Carolina

Charleston, S.C. - The University of Tulsa volleyball squad split its two matches today in the final day of the College of Charleston Invitational in Charleston, S.C. The Golden Hurricane (3-3) defeated Stetson (1-3) in five games (30-17, 30-32, 19-30, 30-16, 15-10) then lost to host College of Charleston (7-1) in three games (30-27, 30-22, 30-23).
Junior Tammy Leuer recorded team-highs in kills (19) and digs (17) in TU's win over Stetson. A trio of freshmen also recorded double-doubles for the Hurricane. Outside Hitter Kristin Bailey recorded 17 kills and 12 digs, while Dana Weddle finished with 15 kills and 12 digs. Freshman setter Vanessa Thon finished with 57 assists and 15 digs. Her assist total is the highest mark for a freshman in TU's history.
The Hurricane finished the match with only 10 hitting errors, which is the lowest mark of the season. Last year, TU recorded only seven errors against Long Island which was a school record.
Things did not go as well for the Hurricane in its second match of the day, as only Thon recorded a double-double with 33 assists and 11 digs. It was the first match of the season that not even one Tulsa player recorded double-digits in kills. Leuer and Weddle finished with nine kills each, while Weddle recorded a team high 17 digs.
Tulsa will now travel to Lynchburg, Va., for the Liberty Tournament. The Golden Hurricane will face Coppins State, Delaware, Navy and Liberty. The tornament will begin on Friday, Sept. 14, and conclude on Saturday, Sept 15.
