Tulsa, Oklahoma - The boats are loaded, the crews are set and Head Coach Kevin Harris is ready to begin his first season as a Hurricane. The University of Tulsa Rowing Team will be in action this Sunday at the Head of the Rock Regatta in Rockford, Ill.
Wisconsin, Notre Dame, Iowa, Minnesota, Kansas, Indiana and other teams from across the nation will be competing at what is considered one of the biggest mid-west fall regattas, the Head of the Rock. The race is 2.75 miles in length, which is smaller than an average regatta, but will be a good tune-up for the Hurricane competing for the first time this fall. Coach Harris will use this race to see how the team competes and measures up against some of the nation's top teams, including Notre Dame, Iowa and Wisconsin who were all ranked in the top-20 during the 2001-2002 season. TU will be competing in the Varsity 2, Women's Rec 1x, Open Women's 4+, Open Women's 2x, Open Women's 8, Novice Women's 4+ and Novice Women's 8.
"I'm very excited and anxious to see how we do in our first event. Last year was a bump on the road for this team, but from what I can see in practice, we are gaining confidence and speed every day. The Head of the Rock will be a good test for us," Harris said.
One of this year's most promising new additions to the team is Freshman Whitney Given, who has stepped up and made an early contribution to the team. She joins TU standouts Ariana Aldaco, Jayme Anderson, Laura Brown, Sue Casey, Lindsay Nook, Amanda Smith and Heather Wilson who hope to lead the Hurricane to its most promising start in what will be the eighth season for the rowing team at TU.
