Fresno State Tops Hurricane in TU's Conference Volleyball Opener

Tulsa, Okla - The Fresno State Bulldogs opened up a tied first game by scoring 12 of the last 17 points in route to a 3-0 (30-23, 30-19, 30-27) Western Athletic Conference volleyball victory on Thursday night at the Donald W. Reynolds Center. The loss drops Tulsa to 15-4 on the season and 0-1 in WAC play. Fresno State is now 14-2 on the season with a 2-1 WAC record.

The first game of the match went back and fourth as neither team could get any momentum going. The largest lead for either squad was two points. With the game tied 18-18, the Bulldogs used timely serving to score 12 of the games final 17 points. Fresno State blew out to a comfortable lead in the second game, and then fought off a TU rally in the third game to seal the victory.

For the match, Tulsa hit a .131 hitting percentage, marking only the third time this season the Golden Hurricane has hit under .200. Tulsa is 15-1 on the season when it hits over .200. Sophomore Dana Weddle led the TU attack with a match-high 13 kills, as senior Amber Martin also posted double-digits with 10 kills. Sophomore Vanessa Thon posted her conference leading 11th double-double performance with 34 assists and 12 digs. Junior Nathalia Araujo recorded a match-best 13 digs, while freshman Evyn Bandy contributed 10 digs.

Tulsa returns to action on Saturday evening, when the Hurricane hosts San Jose State in another WAC match at 7 p.m. in the Donald W. Reynolds Center.
