TU Women's Tennis Tops Central Florida, 6-1

Tulsa, Oklahoma - Tulsa's 49th-ranked women's tennis team won five singles matches and the doubles point to capture a 6-1 victory over Central Florida today at the UCF Tennis Courts in Orlando, Florida.

Tulsa entered the match at full strength, while Central Florida began the day with just three players fit to play and two players suffering from an undisclosed illness. The Knights, who where without their normal number one singles player, were also missing two other players.

The Hurricane took advantage of UCF's downfalls, winning five of six singles matches and two of three doubles contests. UCF was unable to field a No. 3 doubles team and was forced to default the match. Tulsa then won the No. 2 doubles contest and the doubles point when junior Aleksandra Durska and sophomore Mariana Barrios teamed up to defeat Kristina Lohmos and Amira Samara, 8-1. UCF's Anna Westin and Julie Pecastaing handed TU's twin-sister combination of Gabriela and Johanna Zingman their first dual loss this season with an 8-5 upset victory.

In singles at the No. 1 position, Pillay jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first set before Westin was forced to retire due to illness. Durska won her 22nd match of the season with a, 6-3, 6-0, win over Pecastaing at the No. 2 slot. Lohmos gave the Knights their lone point of the match when she captured a, 6-1, 6-3 triumph over TU senior Jana Sedivec at No. 3.

Gabriela Zingman won her sixth consecutive singles match when Samara retired from illness after losing the first set, 6-3. Sophomore Zoe Buhagiar posted her second straight singles win with a, 6-1, 6-4, victory over Moravkova at the No. 5 spot. Central Florida, who could only field five players for the singles lineup, as forced to default the No. 6 singles slot to Johanna Zingman.

With the win, Tulsa improved to 9-4 overall this season, while South Florida dropped to 6-5 in 2002.
