The University of Tulsa rowing team came back from Austin, Texas, with a better understanding of how its team fairs against other competition. Tulsa faced four tough rowing squads in the three day Longhorn Invitational, held this past weekend.

Tulsa faced SMU Sunday morning on Town Lake in Austin for the 2000-meter race. The Hurricane rowers competed in two events, the novice-8 and the varsity-8 races. The conditions for the races were not that favorable as there was a strong headwind the rowers had to go into. The novice-8 race was spread open with SMU winning by nearly 50-seconds (8:22.3 to 9:11.5).

The varsity-8 race was much more contested. SMU led the by two seats at the halfway point. Tulsa caught back up to the SMU boat, but the Mustangs made a move that TU wasn't ready for and thus SMU edged Tulsa's boat by only 10.4 seconds. SMU crossed with a time of 7:30.5 to Tulsa's 7:40.9.

Tulsa's varsity-8 boat consisted of Chrissie Williams (Coxswain), Solange Rousset, Sue Casey, Kristen Taylor, Jayme Anderson, Amanda Smith, Lindsay Nook, Laura Brown, and Melissa Lok (Bow).

The novice-8 lineup was: Marni Gesinski (Coxswain), Amy McGhee, Alexis Weidner, Libby Lowe, Megan Novak, Christine LaBarre, Sonya Miles, Kristy Wyatt, and Maggie Rosene (Bow).

Sunday's Results:

Novice-8:

SMU-8:22.3. Tulsa-9:11.5.

Varsity-8:

SMU-7:30.5. Tulsa-7:40.9.

Note: Tulsa hosts their only home rowing event next Saturday, March 30th, when SMU comes to town. The race will take place on the Arkansas River, near the 21st Street bridge, at approximately 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Around 11:45 a.m. the rowing team will have a ceremony dedicating two boats by naming them after TU president Dr. Lawless and benefactor Sam Stone.
