Tulsa Wins Five Set Thiller over UTEP

Tulsa, Okla. - The University of Tulsa volleyball squad picked up its first Western Athletic Conference match of the season on Thursday night with a 3-2 (25-30, 30-17, 30-20, 24-30, 15-9) victory over the Miners of UTEP in the Donald W. Reynolds Center.
Tulsa utilized a 78-57 advantage in kills as TU set season-highs in both kills and attacks (216). Four Hurricane players posted double-figures in kills, led by junior Dana Weddle with a season-best 17 kills. Fellow junior Lindsay Eaves contributed 15 kills as well.
Senior Nathalia Araujo and freshman Brie Penaluna both recorded double-doubles, as did junior Vanessa Thon. Araujo picked up 14 kills to go along with 25 digs, while Penaluna added 14 kills and 15 digs. Thon posted her third 60+ assist performance with 64 assists and 15 digs.
Defensively, sophomore Evyn Bandy finished with a match high 26 digs as well for the Hurricane. Tulsa posted a season-best 105 digs, the third most in school history, as well as a season-high 15 blocks. Weddle posted eight blocks of her own, as Eaves added another seven.
Tulsa improves to 10-6 on the season, 1-2 in the WAC. UTEP falls to 5-12 on the year, 0-3 in the WAC. The Golden Hurricane close out its two match homestand with Boise State on Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m., in the Reynolds Center. Tickets for the match are $5 for adults and $3 for youth, or free with a ticket to the TU/Hawai`i football game on Saturday evening.
