TU Upends Arkansas 4-2 in Region V Team Qualifier

Fayetteville, Ark. - The second-seeded Tulsa men's tennis team upended top-seeded Arkansas, 4-2, today at the 2003 Region V Team Qualifier hosted by Arkansas at the Dills Indoor Tennis Center in Fayetteville.
In doubles action, Tulsa's Dustin Taylor and Alejandro Tejerina posted an impressive 8-0 decision over Arkansas' Imraan Ismail and Rohan Gajjar in the No. 1 position, while Tulsa's Aleksander Charpantidis and Tom Murray prevailed in a 9-7 win over Viktor Hebrand and Matt Roberts in the No. 3 slot to give the Golden Hurricane the all-important doubles point.
TU's Lucques Maasdorp and Shunsuke Shimizu fell in a tight 8-6 match to the Razorback's Adrians Zguns and Nathan Price in the No. 2 position.
Arkansas' 71st-ranked Zguns notched an upset over 30th-ranked Tejerina, 6-4, 7-5 in the top singles slot, but TU's 58th-ranked Taylor netted a commanding 6-2, 6-1 win over Price in the No. 2 position. Charpantidis dropped a 6-4, 7-6 mark to Arkansas' Gajjar to round out the top-half of the lineup.
Tulsa's Maasdorp posted a 2-6, 6-4, 6-4 comeback victory over Roberts, while Murray overcame Ismail 7-5, 6-2, to earn a win for the Golden Hurricane. Shimizu's match was suspended in the No. 6 slot.
TU qualifies for a position in the ITA National Indoors on February 5, 2004, representing one of the top-16 teams in the nation. Eight teams qualify through winning regional qualifiers and eight more will receive automatic bids according to their national ranking.
