Tulsa, Okla. - Tulsa's 2nd Varsity 8 crew stroked a win for the Golden Hurricane against SMU on the final day of competition at the Longhorn Invitational at Town Lake in Austin, Texas.

The future of Tulsa rowing, the 2nd Varsity 8, earned their first win of the season for the Golden Hurricane as they out-raced SMU. "The women were determined to earn a victory for the team," Head Coach Kevin Harris said. "We had an aggressive race plan and the team executed it very well. Jamie Vick did a nice job at stroke, especially in the middle of the course, to make things happen for the team."

The Varsity 8 team, however, had a disappointing day as they finished with a time of 7:17.6, which isn't indicative of how they have rowed previously in the season or in practice. "I think this team learned a lot today," said Harris. "We know that to be on top in the rowing world, we have to step it up every time we race. After today's race we are even more determined to make the needed changes that will make us faster and stronger throughout the season."

The Novice 8 stroked a gutsy race, as they led the Mustangs in the first 750 meters, but SMU has a bigger and strong team that out-stroked the Golden Hurricane to win the race. "We need to be more efficient, not only in the Novice 8, but in every boat we race," stated Harris. "We are ready to get back to practice and make some needed changes so that we will be ready for our competitors at the William Knecht Cup on April 12-13."
