Tulsa, Okla. - The University of Tulsa rowing team raced well in the first day of competition at the William Knecht Cup in Camden, New Jersey.
"It was a great day today," Head Coach Kevin Harris said. "We came to this race to learn toughness and to learn how to race a better race. I asked the women of the Varsity 8 to double up on races because I knew they could do it and because it would teach them a lot. I think they stepped up to some pretty big challenges today and I am very proud of them."
In the Varsity Pair, Sue Casey and Laura Brown finished first in the second heat with a time of 7:55, while Amanda Smith and Melissa Lok finished in the top of the third heat to advance both boats to the final.
In the final Casey and Brown finished second, just under Bucknell, while Smith and Lok finished fourth.
"I am especially proud of these four women," Harris said. "They had a great attitude going into the race and they really pushed themselves to race like champions. Finishing second was incredible."
The Novice 4 team also raced well today as they finished first in their heat with a time of 8:39.64, and then first in the semi-final. "They are working hard to make things happen as a novice team," stated Harris. "This is the first time they have raced in this type of format, and today they came out and proved they can compete with anybody. I think they will have a tremendous race in tomorrow's finals."
"The Novice 4 did a great job today," Assistant Coach Rosemary Tran said. "They haven't had the opportunity to practice together as much as we would have liked, but they came out and did what needed to be done and they finished a great race."
"Tomorrow's final race will be tougher than the ones today, but I know we can come out and race hard again and finish in the top three."
The Varsity 4 earned a third place finish in their heat to race in the semi-finals, but finished in fourth, just missing the grand final by a second, and advancing to the petite final. "The Varsity 4 is just learning how to be aggressive," Harris said. "In their heat they had to pull up and work hard to qualify and then finished strong. Now we need to just clean up the race and keep our focus, which will make this boat very strong for the Tulsa rowing team."
"Alexandra Holter did an excellent job at stroke today in the Varsity 4 and I am also very proud of Krista Atchley who rejoined the team after transferring last year," said Harris. "Atchley does a terrific job at coxswain and we are glad to have her back as a member of the Tulsa rowing team."
The Varsity 8 team also raced their gutsiest race of the year. After getting down early in the race, TU came back hard to finish second with a time of 7:25.8, but the team couldn't find the strength needed to post a comeback finish as they fell in the semi-finals to finish in sixth place.
"The Varsity 8 just ran out of gas," stated Harris. "This was their last race of the day and they just didn't have the energy to finish strong."
