Volleyball Opens Season With Loss at Dayton

Tulsa, Okla. - The University of Tulsa volleyball squad opened its 2003 campaign by playing the featured game of Friday night of the Dayton Flyers Classic against the host Flyers. UD swept the match (35-33, 30-22, 30-23) by utilizing a 62-47 advantage in total kills before a crowd 371 at the Frericks Center.
Dayton opened the match with 26 kills in the first game, compared to the Hurricane's 18. For the match, UD had a team hitting percentage of .394. Dayton committed only 12 hitting errors in the match, with three players recording double-digits.
Junior Kristin Bailey led the Golden Hurricane attack with 14 kills.Fellow junior Vanessa Thon contributed 24 assists, while Patricia Marques added 12 digs. Thon also recorded 10 digs for her first double-double of the season. Last season Thon posted the third most double-doubles in the WAC with 18.
Tulsa will conclude the tournament on Saturday with a pair of matches, beginning with Towson at 12 noon before finishing up with Stony Brook at 4 p.m. This will be the first meeting between Tulsa and both schools.
