Volleyball Splits on Final Day of Flyer Classic

Dayton, Ohio - The University of Tulsa volleyball team split a pair of matches Saturday on the final day of the Dayton Flyer Classic in Dayton, Ohio. TU lost its first match of the day against Towson, 3-0, before regrouping in the nightcap to defeat Stony Brook, 3-1.

Against Towson, the Tigers used a 51-38 advantage in kills to sweep the Golden Hurricane (30-19, 30-24, 32-30). Sophomore April Hoffman and junior Sarah Miller recorded 13 and 12 kills respectively to lead the Towson attack.

Junior Dana Weddle led the Hurricane charge with 10 kills. Fellow junior Vanessa Thon added 18 assists, while senior Nathalia Araujo contributed 11 digs. Freshman Amy Meyer and junior Kristin Bailey also posted eight kills apeice for the Hurricane.

Tulsa posted a season-high 66 kills against Stony Brook, taking three of the four games from the Seawolves (30-27, 28-30, 30-26, 30-22). Five Golden Hurricane hitters recorded double-figures in kills, led by redshirt freshman Brie Penaluna with 17. Junior Lindsay Eaves and Meyr contributed 12 kills apeice, while Bailey and sophomore Sam Rutherford both added 11 kills.

Thon finished with team-highs in assists (49) and digs (21), in route to posting her second double-double of the season. Penaluna recorded her first career double-double with 12 digs, as did Rutherford with 10 digs. Araujo also recorded 14 digs for the Hurricane.

TU recorded 12 team blocks, led by Rutherford's career-best five total blocks. Bailey led TU with three solo blocks as well.

Tulsa, 1-2 on the season, will travel to Nacodoches, Texas next weekend for the Stephen F. Austin Tournament on Sept 5-6. TU will face Texas-Pan American on Friday afternoon, before concluding the tournament against Louisiana-Lafayette and SFA on Saturday.
