TU's Muscolino Advances to Quarterfinals at Wilson/ITA Regionals

Tulsa, Okla. - Daniela Muscolino was part of Tulsa women's tennis two victories in the third day of play at the Wilson/ITA Region V Championships held at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center at the University of Tulsa.
Muscolino, the tournament's No. 1 singles seed, won two matches in both singles and doubles to advance to the quarterfinals. In singles, Muscolino defeated Carolina Pongratz (Boise State), 6-4, 6-1, in the round of 32 and in the round of 16 breezed past No. 9 seed, Lauren Jones (BYU), 6-2, 6-0.
TU women's head coach, Paige McMurray says of Muscolino's play on Friday, "Dani played the best tennis she has played all year. She was extremely tough and determined to get her wins in her two singles matches today."
TU had three other players in the Round of 32. Santie Delport advanced to round of 16 by defeating Nora Quintal (New Mexico), 6-3, 6-0, but lost to No. 5 seed Iva Gersic (New Mexico), 6-3, 6-3. Lisette Pereira and Kindsay Grimes dropped their round of 32 matches to No. 9 seed Sofia Holden (BYU) and No. 9 seed Olga Boulythcheva (BYU), respectively.
McMurray says of the threesome, "I am proud of the effort and determination that they played with. They played very talented players but we weren't able to execute against them. But I am proud of Santie's first win today. She played very hard."
In the doubles draw, three Golden Hurricane teams began the day in the Round of 32, but only one team advanced to tomorrow's play. Muscolino and doubles partner, Carla Zabaleta, seeded No. 3, defeated Rosario Negrete and Bindiya Parekh (Arkansas-Little Rock), 8-3 in the Round of 32. In the round of 16, the duo defeated Olgo Klimova and Jesica Simosa (Kansas State), 8-5.
The Wilson/ITA Region V Championships will continue at 10:00 am, Saturday with quarterfinal and semifinal matches in main draw singles and doubles and consolations. The finalists in the singles competition, as well as the winner of the doubles tournament, advance to the Wilson/ITA Individual Championships, in Ann Arbor, Michigan, Nov. 4-7.
