Dallas, Texas - The University of Tulsa volleyball squad won its fourth Western Athletic Conference match of the season with a 3-1 (30-27, 26-30, 30-24, 30-28) victory over SMU at the Moody Coliseum. The win was the first ever victory for TU over SMU in Dallas. It also tied a school record for most conference wins in a season.
Sophomore Joyce Silva was one kill shy of her third 30-kill performance with a match-high 29 kills for the Hurricane. Tulsa utilized a .225-.191 advantage over the host Mustangs, as the Hurricane held a second straight WAC opponent under a .200 hitting percentage. Four TU players recorded double-digit dig performances, led by junior Evyn Bandy's 22 digs. Fellow junior Sam Rutherford also led the team with nine blocks, the most by a TU player in a match this season.
Senior Vanessa Thon led TU with a match-high 56 assists to go along with 13 digs for her fifth double-double of the season. Freshman Kassiana Urnau also posted a double-double, her ninth, with 15 kills and 12 digs. She also posted two of TU's 12 service aces. Tulsa reached double-figures in service aces for the ninth time this year as well, as the Hurricane now have a WAC-best 196 aces on the year.
Tulsa (15-8, 4-7 WAC) concluded a five-match road swing with its match at SMU. The Hurricane returns to the friendly confines of the Donald W. Reynolds Center with three home matches in November, beginning with a match against UTEP on Nov. 6.
