SMU Defeats TU in Wild Five-Game Volleyball Match

Tulsa, Okla. - The University of Tulsa volleyball team suffered a heart-breaking five-game defeat on Thursday night to SMU, 3-2 (22-30, 26-30, 30-26, 30-23, 15-13) before a crowd of 142 at the Donald W. Reynolds Center. SMU improves to 9-5 (3-1 WAC) on the season, while Tulsa falls to 12-5 (1-4 WAC). The win was SMU's ninth consecutive victory over the Hurricane dating back to the 2000 season.

Sophomore Joyce Silva led the Hurricane with 20 kills, while senior Vanessa Thon posted 51 assists. junior Evyn Bandy recorded 19 digs to lead the squad in that category. Silva also landed three of TU's six service aces. Senior Lindsay Eaves recorded 15 kills for her 13th double-figure performance of the season. Freshman Kassiana Urnau recorded her sixth consecutive double-double with 11 kills and 12 digs.

The Mustangs were led by senior Beth Karasek's match-high 25 kills to go along with 10 digs. Fellow senior Jacky Niederstadt recorded 17 kills and 20 digs, while junior Ashley Zener contributed 11 kills.

Sophomore Jennette Evanco posted a match-high 27 digs for the Mustangs, who not only came back from two games down, but down 12-9 in the fifth game. Junior Jessica Mihm added 53 assists.

Tulsa will look to bounce back on Saturday by hosting Louisiana Tech at 2 p.m. in the Reynolds Center.
