Tulsa, Okla. - The University of Tulsa volleyball team defeated Louisiana Tech, 3-0 (30-26, 30-19, 30-28), on Saturday afternoon in the Donald W. Reynolds Center in front of a crowd of 142. The Hurricane saved off a late rally by the Lady Techsters in the third game to even the overall series at five matches apiece.
It was the second straight match TU had won the first two games of the match and fourth straight for the Hurricane to win the first game. Tulsa also won the first two stanzas of Thursday night's match against SMU. Tulsa is now 6-1 on the season with all six wins being sweeps, in matches that the Hurricane won the first two sets.
A trio of Hurricane hitters recorded 12 kills, led by sophomore Brie Penaluna who came off the bench to spark TU to a come-from-behind victory in the first game. Fellow sophomore Joyce Silva and freshman Kassiana Urnau also posted 12 kills for TU. Senior Vanessa Thon recorded her third double-double during WAC play with 38 assists and 10 digs.
The Hurricane recorded 10 aces on the day, the most as a team during the conference season. It was also the eighth time this season TU reached double-digits in aces. Urnau led the team with four aces, while senior Lindsay Eaves and junior Evyn Bandy added three aces apiece.
Tulsa outhit LTU 51-33 in the kills category, however 23 hitting errors by the Hurricane kept the Lady Techsters close. Louisiana Tech benefited the most by TU miscues in the third game in a come-back attempt that erased a 20-9 TU lead. Nine TU hitting errors combined with one service error allowed LTU to tie the game 28-28. A pair of kills by Urnau closed out the contest and ended the Lady Techsters bid.
The Hurricane (13-5, 2-4 WAC) will hit the road for a five-match road swing beginning with trip to Rice on Friday, Oct. 15. Louisiana Tech falls to 5-13, 1-4 in the WAC.
