Rice Sweeps Hurricane in WAC Volleyball Action

Tulsa, Okla. - Rice controlled the net both offensively and defensively as the Owls swept The University of Tulsa, 3-0 (30-24, 30-26, 30-24) to close the Western Athletic Conference portions of both team's seasons before a crowd of 175 at the Donald W. Reynolds Center. The two squads will face each other in the first round of the WAC Tournament in Reno, Nev.

Rice used an offensive one-two punch of Rebeca Pazo and Lindsey Carter as the duo combined for 30 of the Owls' 50 kills. Pazo led all hitters with 16 kills, while Carter contributed 14 kills. The Owls out hit the Hurricane by only five kills, 50-45. However, 26 TU hitting errors added to the Rice .311-.145 hitting percentage advantage.

Senior Kristin Bailey led the TU attack with 11 kills, will WAC Freshman of the Year candidate Kassiana Urnau added nine kills for the Hurricane. Senior Vanessa Thon posted a double-double, her sixth of the season, with 39 assists and 11 digs. Junior Evyn Bandy contributed 20 digs also.

After the WAC Tournament, Tulsa will return for one final home match on Nov. 23. The Hurricane will host Oral Roberts in a 7 p.m. match, renewing the cross-town rivalry at the Reynolds Center.
