Tulsa, Okla. - In a year of firsts for The University of Tulsa volleyball squad, the Golden Hurricane has added one more to the list. Sophomore Joyce Silva was named to the Western Athletic Conference All-WAC Volleyball First Team.
The Belo Horizonte, Brazil, native leads Tulsa with 345 kills a 5.00 kills per game average. Her kills per game mark also tops the conference. Not only is she the first player in TU history to be named to the conference's first team, she is also the only TU player to record over 30-kills in a match, twice in the same season. Silva recorded 36 kills against San Jose State, 31 kills against Air Force and 29 kills against SMU, the second, third and fourth most in school history for a single match.
Silva transferred to Tulsa from Martin Methodist College in Pulaski, Tenn. She has played in 69 games this season and 19 matches, including 17 starts. Earlier this season she was named MVP of the Hibernia Bank Classic after she recorded 102 kills in four TU victories at the tournament. She has recorded seven double-doubles on the season as well.
The Hurricane will travel to Reno, Nev., for the WAC Tournament this week, beginning on Friday, Nov. 19. TU, the No. 7-seed, will face the No.2-seed Rice Owls in the closing match of the first round. Following the tournament, Tulsa will return to the Donald W. Reynolds Center for a Nov. 23 match against cross-town rival Oral Roberts
