Reno, Nev. - After qualifying for its third WAC Volleyball tournament in four year, The University of Tulsa volleyball squad had to face the Rice Owls for the second time in six days in the first round of the conference tournament. The second-seeded Owls swept Tulsa for the third time this season, 3-0 (30-23, 30-22, 30-25).

Senior Vanessa Thon added 35 assists, while junior Evyn Bandy contributed a team-high eight digs. Fellow junior Sam Rutherford also added five blocks defensively.
While the Hurricane's hitting improved in the tournament compared to last week's match up, only 17 errors as compared to 26 in the conference finale, serving errors doomed TU. The Hurricane committed 14 service errors on the night, while recording only four service aces. Rice recorded nine service aces, the most of any TU opponent this season.
Tulsa will conclude the 2004 campaign with a final home match on Tuesday, Nov. 23 against ORU in the friendly confines of the Donald W. Reynolds Center. The 7 p.m. match will renew a cross-town rivalry that has been dormant since 1998.
