Tulsa, Okla. - The University of Tulsa women's rowing team began the season on Friday evening at the Fourth Annual Longhorn Invitational on Town Lake in Austin, Texas.

TU raced against Kansas State in a Novice 8 head-to-head race, but finished behind the Wildcats with a time of 8:03.2. The Golden Hurricane, however, improved on last year's 8:05.4 mark against KSU.

"It wasn't the race we expected," said Assistant Rowing Coach Rosemary Tran. "We came out fast, but settled high and therefore wasn't as affective as K-State. The team was really excited today because this was the first time that many of the rowers raced in this format. I think we will have a much better race tomorrow against Iowa."

Tulsa also matched up against 14th-ranked Texas in the Varsity 4, but the Longhorns prevailed at home finishing 11 seconds ahead of TU with a time of 8:30.4.

"Going up against the Texas Longhorns is a tough season opener, but I thought the team handled it well and raced a good race," said Head Coach Kevin Harris. "Christine LaBarre stroked a strong race plan, but we just weren't fast enough today, but we will get faster throughout the season. I am happy with our performance and look forward to tomorrow's races."

1. Kansas State - 7:31.6
