El Paso, Texas - The Tulsa women golfers carded an opening round six-over par 294 and sits in second-place at the Western Athletic Conference Golf Championships on the par-72 Sunset Course at the Underwood Golf Complex on the Fort Bliss Military Base.
Tulsa trails first-place San Jose State by three strokes, as the Lady Spartans carded a first round score of 291. Nevada is in third-place with a 298 total, followed by Hawaii (306), Boise State (309), SMU (312) and host UTEP (322).
The Hurricane, vying for a sixth straight WAC Championship, is led by senior Julie Tvede after the first day of competition. The WAC's defending individual medalist had an opening round four-under par 68 and is in a three-way tie for first place with San Jose State's Ashley Gomes and Nevada's Erin Long.
Tulsa counted scores of 68, 73, 75 and 78, as San Jose State carded scores of 68, 73, 74 and 76 to finish three strokes ahead of the Hurricane.
Tvede's bogey-free round included birdies on the par-3 third hole, the par-4 eighth and 18th holes and the par-5 14th hole en route to her four-under par score. Fellow senior Suzie Fisher shot a one-over par 73 today and is in a tie for fifth place, while junior Lee-Anne Pace is two strokes back with a first round score of 75 and is in 11th place overall.
"It was perfect weather today, we just didn't have as good a day from all five golfers as we needed," said Tulsa Head Coach Holley Hair. "Julie had a good day, but Suzie wasn't able to make her putts and didn't make a birdie all day. We're six-over as a team and Cas was six-over herself. We're not used to that kind of play from her."
Sophomore Cas Bridge is in 17th place with a round of 78, followed by freshman Ann-Christina Kindgren's score of 83.
"We need to play better tomorrow. I wouldn't mind the conditions getting tougher," added Hair.
Play resumes on Tuesday with 18 holes. The 54-hole tournament concludes on Wednesday.
