Tulsa Women's Rowing Team to Host

Tulsa, Oklahoma - The University of Tulsa women's rowing team and the TU chapter for Habitat for Humanity are teaming up together for the second straight year for the 2005 "Row for Humanity" fundraiser. Rowers, as well as members of Habitat for Humanity, will row for one-hour intervals on indoor rowing machines called an ergometer this Wednesday, January 19, from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Allen Chapman Activity Center (440 S. Gary Avenue) on the TU campus.
The team's goal is to raise $10,000 and contribute 20-percent of the proceeds to the TU Habitat for Humanity, while the remainder will be used to buy equipment for the TU rowing team. The money raised by a TU Habitat for Humanity member will go directly to the organization. The donation from the Golden Hurricane rowing team has traditionally been one of the largest made to the organization on annual basis. Last year, the TU rowers contributed a $1,012 donation, and this year's goal will be to donate at least $2,000 to the organization.
"Our goal is to help our campus Habitat for Humanity Chapter raise enough money to build a house here in Tulsa," Head Coach Kevin Harris said. "With rising housing and living costs in our city, Habitat does an awesome job of getting affordable housing in the hands of those who need it. Additionally, this work is important to the rowing team because it brings home to the rowers how important giving back to the community can be in a very personal way. That is a part of our educational mission at The University of Tulsa and we are glad to participate in this nationwide event."
"The Row for Humanity is one of the most important things we do all year outside of competition," Harris added.
The TU rowing team has been involved with Tulsa Habitat for Humanity throughout the fall. The team built a house for a family during the off-weekends this past fall and dedicated the house on Dec. 5.
