Tulsa, Okla. - Sophomore Julia Silva recorded one of the best seasons in school history in 2005, while helping The University of Tulsa volleyball team to the most wins since 1980, with 23. For her efforts, Silva earned a spot on the American Volleyball Coaches Association All-Midwest Region team.
The native of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil became the first player to record three triple-doubles in a season since 1996. In only her third match in a TU uniform, Silva posted 12 kills, 45 assists and 10 digs in a victory over Fordham. Silva posted a pair of triples during Conference USA play, one of only three league players to do so. During TU's five-game victory over Memphis, she posted 11 kills, 57 assists and a season best 23 digs. In the Hurricane's match at the C-USA Championships, she recorded 10 kills 58 assists and 14 digs against Tulane.
Silva finished the season with 17 double-doubles, the fourth most in C-USA this season. She also recorded over 50 assists in 12 contests, including a season-high of 72 in a five-game victory over UTEP on Oct. 14th at the Donald W. Reynolds Center. That total was the fourth most by a setter in the conference this season.
With 166 kills on the season, Silva also proved to be even more of an offensive threat than just a passer. Her .332 hitting percentage on the year ranked third among C-USA hitters in 2005. Defensively, not only did she rank second on the team in digs with 312, Silva also ranked second in block assists with 64. She finished third on the squad in solo blocks with 11 and total blocks with 75.
The Golden Hurricane finished the year with a 23-7 record, the most wins since the 1980 squad finished 30-11. The .767 winning percentage on the season is the highest in school history, besting the 1980 mark of .731.
