Tulsa, Oklahoma - The University of Tulsa women's rowing team will open the 2005 spring racing season this Sunday at 9:00 a.m. against Creighton in a head-to-head race at Zink Lake on the Arkansas River.
Tulsa and Creighton will compete in three varsity and two novice races on a 1,800-meter course. The three varsity events include the Varsity 8, the Varsity 4+ and the Varsity Lightweight 4+, while the two novice races include the Novice 8 and the Novice 4+.
The two teams will race for the inaugural Lawless Cup, which was named in honor of former University of Tulsa President, Dr. Bob Lawless and Mrs. Marcy Lawless. Both Marcy and President Emeritus Bob Lawless worked hard during their tenure to make The University of Tulsa one of the top universities in the United States. As part of that effort, both believed sports to be an integral part of the campus experience and that athletics enhances the image of the university to the public. The Lawless Cup will be awarded to the winner of the Varsity 8 race.
"We are very excited to the racing Creighton," Head Coach Kevin Harris said. "Creighton is usually our first race of the season. The Bluejays are a very formidable competitor with good speed. The last time we raced against each other was last year at the Dad Vail Regatta. It was an epic race and our Novice 8 won by one second, so we are looking forward to renewing the rivalry."
"We are also excited about racing for the Lawless Cup. Sunday's race marks the first time we will race in a traditional dual format, so we are looking forward to competing against Creighton for the Cup. We have worked hard in the offseason and now it is time to test ourselves," Harris added.
