Golden Hurricane Men's Tennis Team Upsets SMU

Dallas, Texas - The No. 44-ranked Golden Hurricane men's tennis team defeated perennial WAC powerhouse, No. 46 SMU, 4-3, at the Haggar Tennis Stadium on the campus of SMU. Tulsa battled back from being down 1-0 after being swept in the doubles matches to win the duel and improve to 13-8 on the season, SMU drops to 10-9.
Tulsa dug itself an early hole as it lost all three of the doubles matches to give the Mustangs a 1-0 lead. SMU's Paul McNaughton and Federico Murgier took Aleksander Charpantidis and Achim Roth to a tiebreaker to win 9-8 at the number one ladder position. Andy Connelly and Diego Camacho also went to tiebreak to lose to Peter Oredsson and Henrik Soderberg, 9-8.
Tulsa rallied to win four singles matches to win the duel. Charpantidis took over the number one ladder position to defeat Paul McNaughton, in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2. Ricardo Soriano posted a 6-1, 7-5 win over Federico Murgier. Will Gray, playing in the number three ladder spot for the first time this season, defeated Gwinyai Chingoka, 6-3, 6-4. Diego Camacho had to go three sets to close out the match for TU, as he beat David Kuczer, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3.
"SMU is a powerhouse in the WAC," said Head Coach Vince Westbrook. "We haven't beaten them in a few season so this is a great win for TU."
Tulsa stays in the Metroplex and will play TCU Sunday at 11:30 a.m.
