Muscolino and Zabaleta Receive Top WAC Honors

Junior Daniela Muscolino was named the WAC Player of the Year in women's tennis.

Honolulu - Two University of Tulsa women's tennis players took top honors in the Western Athletic Conference this year. Junior Daniela Muscolino was named the WAC Player of the Year, while Carla Zabaleta was selected as the conference's Freshman of the Year.

Both were also named to the all-conference singles and doubles teams. The two teamed up to earn first-team honors in doubles play, while in singles action, Muscolino was named to the first team and Zabaleta was a second-team pick.

Muscolino, a native or Buenos Aires, Argentina, finished the season with a 23-12 singles record, earning her first-team all-WAC singles honors as well. She was 15-4 in duels, 8-6 against ranked opponents, and 3-0 against WAC opponents. Muscolino is currently ranked 84th by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. She has 68 career singles wins, giving her sole possession of fifth place on the school's all-time wins list. She was named the February 21st WAC Player of the Week, her fifth such honor. Muscolino was named to the 2004 All-Conference team as well.

Zabaleta, from Mar del Plata, Argentina, in addition to her Freshman of the Year honor was named to the All-WAC second team. The freshman had a 21-10 record in her first year as a Golden Hurricane. Zabaleta was 16-6 in duels, including a perfect 4-0 record against WAC opponents.

The duo of Muscolino and Zabaleta were also named to the all-WAC doubles first team. They posted an 18-12 overall record and was a semifinalist at the Wilson/ITA Central Region Championship.
