Tulsa, Oklahoma - Rosemary Tran has announced her resignation as the assistant women's rowing coach at The University of Tulsa, according to TU Head Rowing Coach Kevin Harris.
Tran recently completed her fourth season at TU in 2005. During her stint as an assistant coach, she served as the first novice coach in the program's eight-year history and guided the Novice 4+ boat to impressive victories over Duke and Kansas and finished sixth and the Southern Intercollegiate Rowing Association Championships during the 2005 campaign.
"Rosemary's leaving is a huge loss for our rowing program," Harris said. "Her four years at Tulsa have been extremely positive and she will be missed greatly by everyone on our team and in the athletic department. We wish her well as she follows new opportunities."
During the 2004 campaign, Tran coached the Novice 8+ to wins over Iowa and SMU for the first in school history. She coached both novice fours into the Grand Final at Knecht Cup. TU was the only school in event to advance two boats. Tulsa finished first and fifth in Grand Final out of 22 crews and the winning crew was the first from TU to capture a victory at the event.
Tulsa turned in a strong finish at Dad Vail Regatta in the season finale. In its first-ever appearance at the event, the Novice 8 finished fourth out of 30 crews, which marked the strongest finish for the Tulsa Novice 8 at a national event.
During the 2003 season, Tran guided the Novice team to their most successful year in school history, as the Novice 4+ finished fourth at the William Knecht Cup and the Southern Intercollegiate Rowing Association Championships. Tran also coached the Novice 8+ to a fourth-place finish at the Big XII Invitational.
Tran's first collegiate coaching job came at her alma mater when she was hired as an assistant coach at Smith College. She assisted both the varsity and novice teams, coaching three boats into the Grand Finals at both the New England Rowing Championships and the Champion International Collegiate Regatta. Her crews earned two silver medals at the New England event, and a silver and a bronze medal at the Champion International
A 1998 graduate of Smith College, Tran received her bachelor's degree in chemistry. She earned her master's degree in exercise and sport studies in 2001.
As a student-athlete at Smith College, she was a four-year rower and was the varsity captain for two years, earning team MVP honors in 1997 and 1998, and was a member of the New England Women's 8 all-conference team in 1997. Tran was also a member of the team that competed at the 1998 NCAA National Championships.
