Tulsa, Okla. - The University of Tulsa volleyball squad swept on the final day of the Crowne Plaza Invite at the Donald W. Reynolds Center. A crowd of 127 witnessed a 3-1 (23-30, 30-18, 30-25, 32-30) exciting victory over Stephen F. Austin in the championship match. Earlier in the day TU defeated Grambling State, 3-0 (30-24, 30-12, 30-18).
Junior Germana Hilaria and sophomore Kassiana Urnau led TU with 16 kills apiece in the finale, as junior Amy Meyer added 14 kills as well. Sophomore Julia Silva recorded a season-high 53 assists. She also posted 13 digs and nearly pulled off her second triple-double of the season with eight kills. Meyer's 16 digs led the Hurricane in that category.
Tulsa won a match for the first time this season, in which the Hurricane lost the first match. Eight of TU's previous wins came after Tulsa outscored its opponent in the first game of the match. In its lone loss on the year, TU lost the first game.
Against Grambling State, Meyer had a match-high eight kills, with senior Evyn Wills posting a match-best 25 assists. Freshman Kelsey Wood led TU with eight digs, while fellow freshman Renee Brooks and junior Brie Penaluna posted seven blocks apiece for Tulsa.
Silva was named the tournament's MVP, while teammates seniors Dana Weddle and Evyn Wills were also named to the all-tournament team.
The Golden Hurricane will open its Conference USA season on Tuesday, Sept. 13 by traveling to SMU in Dallas. The match between former WAC rivals is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. at the Moody Coliseum.
