It looks as if the tradition of closely contested matches between The University of Tulsa and SMU volleyball teams which started in the Western Athletic Conference will carry over to Conference USA. Both former WAC rivals opened up C-USA play on Tuesday with a five-game thriller in Moody Coliseum in Dallas. The Mustangs won the contest, 3-2 (30-24, 26-30, 30-23, 26-30, 15-12).
SMU was able to take advantage of 32 unforced errors by TU, as well as 16 total blocks to improve its overall advantage in the series to 16-3. The win also made up for a 3-1 TU victory in Dallas last season. The Mustangs rallied from a 12-10 deficit in the deciding game, using three of their blocks for the final points of the contest.
Tulsa was led by junior Amy Meyer with 23 kills. She also posted her second consecutive double-double with 14 digs. Sophomore Julia Silva recorded a season-high 57 assists, while senior Evyn Wills posted a career-best 34 digs. Sophomore Kassiana Urnau also recorded 21 digs for the Golden Hurricane.
Tulsa will travel to Chicago, Ill., over the weekend for the Loyola-Chicago Tournament. TU will face Columbia on Friday, Sept. 16, in a 5 p.m. contest. On Saturday, Tulsa will face Manhattan at 2:30 p.m., before concluding the tournament against host Loyola-Chicago at 7:30 p.m.
The Hurricane returns to the friendly confines of the TU campus and C-USA action on Friday, Sept. 23 to host Southern Miss at 7 p.m. The match will be played at the Mabee Gym at TU.
