Tulsa, Okla. - The University of Tulsa volleyball won its eighth Conference USA match of the season in the friendly confines of the Donald W. Reynolds Center, with a 3-1 (30-22, 24-30, 30-28, 30-26) win over Houston. Not only did the victory give TU its second consecutive season without a home loss during league play, the win also gave TU the outright C-USA title for the first time in school history.
Junior Kassiana Urnau led the Golden Hurricane attack with 19 kills and 13 digs, for her 20th double-double of the year. Senior Amy Meyer also recorded double-figures in her final home match, with 14 kills. Junior Julia Silva recorded 49 assists and 12 digs for her 16th double-double of the season. She has posted a double-double in the last six matches for TU. Senior Brie Penaluna also reached double-figures for Tulsa, with a season-best 12 digs.
Tulsa improves to 26-6 (13-3 C-USA) on the year, while Houston finishes the regular season with a 17-14 (8-8 C-USA) mark.
Already assured of the top seed in next week's C-USA Championship at Houston, Tulsa earned the outright regular-season title on Sunday with the win. It is the first conference title for a team that had never posted a winning record in conference play until last season. This year's 13 league victories is a school record for the Hurricane. With a bye in the first round, Tulsa will likely play the winner of the SMU/Southern Miss match that will be played on Thursday. TU's first match at the championship will be played on Friday, as times and a full bracket should be announced Sunday evening.
