Tulsa, Okla. - The University of Tulsa volleyball squad will close out the regular season with a pair of Conference USA matches. Tulsa will host Rice on Friday at 7 p.m., followed by a 1 p.m. match against Houston on Sunday. With a win in either match, Tulsa could earn at least a share of the C-USA title. That has caught the eye of more than one person, thus a story on ESPN.com was published earlier today.
The Golden Hurricane took a five-set thriller against the Owls just two weeks ago, 3-2 (29-31, 30-25, 25-30, 30-24, 15-7) in Houston. In that match, there were 26 ties and 13 lead changes recorded, including eight ties in the pivotal fourth game. Rice still holds an 18-5 advantage in the overall series with Tulsa.
Houston held TU to its second-lowest hitting percentage of the season at .195 in a 3-0 30-21, 30-22, 30-27) Cougar victory in Houston last month. TU's 44 kills were also the fewest the Hurricane has recorded during C-USA play this season. TU also gave up 10 aces to the Cougars, the most this season by the Hurricane. Houston holds a 2-1 advantage in the overall series, as last year was the first time the two teams had met before. Both squads protected their home floors with 3-0 wins in 2005.
