Troy, Ala. - The University of Tulsa volleyball team kicked off its 2006 campaign with a 3-0 (30-19, 30-24, 30-27) victory over North Florida at the Hampton Inn Spiketacular in Troy, Ala.

"We were very pleased with the way we played defense tonight," said first-year Head Coach Ed Allen. "The team responded well to what we have tried to accomplish the last couple of weeks in pre-season workouts."

Senior Germana Hilario and sophomore Renee Brooks led the Golden Hurricane with eight kills apiece. Junior Julia Silva posted 30 of the team's 35 assists, while fellow junior Kassiana Urnau recorded a team-high 15 digs. Urnau also recorded seven kill for the Hurricane.

While Tulsa just did post more kills in the match with 39 compared to 38 by UNF, the Hurricane held the Osprey's to a .107 hitting percentage. TU also posted seven serving aces, with sophomore Malorey Grove and senior Brie Penaluna having two apiece.

"Our consistency, especially on the defensive end really helped us," said Allen. "Holding a team to almost under .100 hitting percentage for a match is a positive to build upon, especially in the first match of the season."

Tulsa will conclude the Spiketacular on Saturday with a pair of matches. TU will face Florida A&M at 11:30 a.m., followed by a match with the host Trojans of Troy at 6 p.m.
