Tulsa, Okla. - Vanessa Andrews, a junior rower and geophysics major at The University of Tulsa, was selected as a Barry M. Goldwater Scholar, as announced by the Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence Foundation. She is a 2004 graduate from Davis (Calif.) Senior High School and seeks to earn a doctoral degree in earthquake seismology to pursue a career researching earthquakes.

"Vanessa is a tremendous student-athlete," Head Coach Kevin Harris said. "We found out she was named a Goldwater Scholar on Saturday, and on Sunday she turns around and helps lead the Varsity 8+ to a win over Creighton in the Lawless Cup Regatta. We are all very proud of her accomplishments both on and off the water."

Andrews is a two-year letterwinner and has participated in nearly every regatta during her career. She helped TU post impressive finishes in the Varsity 2x, Varsity 4+ and 2nd Varsity 8+ as a sophomore, and in the Novice 8+ during her freshmen campaign.

The Foundation awarded 317 scholarships for the 2007-08 academic year to undergraduate sophomores and juniors from the United States. The Goldwater Scholars were selected on the basis of academic merit from a field of 1,110 mathematics, science and engineering students who were nominated by the faculties of colleges and universities nationwide. One hundred seventy-four of the Scholars are men, 143 are women, and virtually all intend to obtain a Ph.D. as their degree objective.

The Goldwater Foundation is a federally endowed agency established by Public Law 99-661 on November 14, 1986. The Scholarship Program, honoring Senator Barry M. Goldwater, was designed to foster and encourage outstanding students to pursue careers in the fields of mathematics, the natural sciences and engineering. The Goldwater Scholarship is the premier undergraduate award of its type in these fields.
