Camden, N.J. -

The University of Tulsa women's rowing team advanced four boats to the finals and the Novice 4+ took home a gold medal at the William Knecht Cup on Saturday afternoon on the Cooper River in Camden, N.J. The regatta was originally scheduled to continue tomorrow, but due to impending bad weather, the regatta concluded today.

"It was a great day for Tulsa," Head Rowing Coach Kevin Harris said. "I am incredibly excited about our races and results, but also very happy about the way our team handled today's last-minute change of putting all the races on one day."

The Novice 4+, coxed by freshman Leslie Sanditen and consisting of Hannah Grafe, Susan Stangl, Aidan Leddy and Jennifer Anderson, tallied a time of 8:24.2 in their heat to advance to the final. In the final, the TU crew improved their time by nearly 10 seconds, 8:14.9, to take home the gold medal.

"We did really well for our first major regatta," Sanditen said. "Today's race showed us what we can do and it set a good tone for the season."

"It was the first big race for the Novices and they were truly amazing," Assistant Rowing Coach Julie Domina said. "They did a great job and hopefully they will take the confidence gained from today's races and apply that to the rest of the season."

Tulsa's Varsity Pair of Lisa Simes and Danielle Guccione took home a third-place finish with their time of 9:01.3, while the 2nd Varsity 8 also claimed a third-place finish with a time of 7:09.7. The Golden Hurricane's Varsity 8+ turned in a time of 7:14.9 for a sixth-place overall mark among 29 teams.

"We turned in some strong races in the Varsity 8+ against teams that we have struggled with in the past and finished sixth out of 29 crews, which is very encouraging," Harris said. "I am very proud of the team and excited about where we are headed."
