Tulsa Set to Host Conference USA Women's Tennis Tournament

Tulsa, Okla. - The University of Tulsa is set to host the Conference USA Women's Tennis Championship April 19-22 at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center.
First round matches will start at 10 a.m. on Thursday, April 19, with UCF facing East Carolina. No. 7 seeded Houston will then take on No. 10 seed Rice at 2 p.m., while at the same time No. 6 seed UTEP will face No. 11 seed Memphis.
Tulsa garnered the top seed in the tournament and will play on Friday April 20 against the winner of the UCF versus ECU match at 10 a.m. Also at 10 a.m. the No. 4 seed UAB will take on No. 5 seed Southern Miss. At 2 p.m. on Friday, No. 2 seed SMU will face the winner of the Houston versus Rice match, while No. 3 seed Marshall will face the winner of the UTEP Memphis match.
Daily admission for the tournament is $6.00 for adults and $4.00 for youth. There will also be a four-day tournament pass available for $20.00. For more information on tickets call (918) 631-GoTU (4688).
With continued construction on Delaware Ave. possibly keeping that route to the Case Tennis Center closed, an alternate route has been devised. When heading west on 11th street, take a right on South Columbia Street one block past Delaware. Continue on to 6th street and take a right and the center's parking lot will be on your right.
This year's field is strong and boasts a combined record of 142-83. Seven of the teams sport a .600 winning percentage or better, including four with a better than .800 mark led by UAB who has a .933 winning percentage going 14-1.
The host Tulsa enters the tournament with an 18-4 record and a 2-0 record against C-USA opponents. TU is led by Santie Delport with a 16-4 record in the spring, going 8-4 at the two and 6-0 at the three. The Hurricane also boasts three players that have gone over 20 wins for the season. In doubles, Tulsa is led by Delport and Marta Marcinkowska with a 15-5 spring record, including a 9-0 mark at the number two position.
East Carolina comes into the tournament with a 19-9 record, but dropped its only C-USA matchup, 5-2, to Houston. The Pirates are paced by Miriea Gol with an 18-4 record this spring, including a 6-0 showing at the two and an 11-3 outing at the three. In doubles play, Alex Smith and Brooke Walter set the bar with a 10-3 record in duels, including a 9-3 mark at the number three position.
Houston brings a 13-6 record, but is currently on a three-match losing streak. The Cougars are 2-3 in conference, with wins over Memphis and East Carolina. Leila Salek paces UH with a spring record of 16-3, most of which has come at the number two position where she is 12-2. Salek teams with Loli Gomez to led the Cougars in doubles with a 9-4 record, 8-4 of which are at the number one position.
Marshall enters with a 14-11 record and is one of two schools in the conference to have not played a conference match. The Herd is led by Kellie Schmitt who is 18-6 on the year, playing all her matches at the number one position. In doubles, Thaddea Lock and Karolina Soor have compiled a 12-3 record, going 5-1 at the two and 5-0 at the three position.
Memphis comes to Tulsa, Okla., with a 1-15 record and an 0-5 mark against C-USA foes. The Tigers are led by Amanda Brown who has a 3-9 record, while in doubles, Christina Wieser and Ekin Zafir are 4-9. The Tigers are currently in the midst of a 13-match losing streak.
Rice enters the tournament with a 6-14 record and an 0-2 mark in conference action. Julie Chao paces the Owls with a 10-9 record, including a 9-7 mark at the number one position. Chao teams with Tiffany Lee to post a 5-13 doubles record, playing all of their matches at the one position.
SMU comes to the tournament with a 19-4 record with a 3-1 C-USA record. The Mustangs are led by Claire Rietsch with a 19-2 record in the spring, including a 16-1 mark in the number three position. Rietsch teams up with Natalia Bubien to play number one doubles for SMU and have totaled a 17-3 record.
Southern Miss enters the weekend with a 16-4 record and is 2-2 in conference action. Stephanie Dellocono leads the Eagles with a 16-2 record, going 11-1 at the four position. Sherry Price and Brittany Serret have put together a 14-5 record at the one position for USM in doubles.
UAB enters the tournament with the best record in the conference after moving to 14-1 on the year. The Blazers' only loss came to Mississippi State, which was followed by an 11-match winning streak that included wins over Memphis and Southern Miss. Julia von Samson paces UAB with a 12-0 record, with a 3-0 mark at the two and a 9-0 mark at the three position. In doubles, Samson has teamed with Annamieke Elsholz to post a 5-1 record at the one position.
UCF sports a 10-7 record coming into the weekend and, like Marshall, has not played conference opponent this season. The Knights are led by Elvira Serrot who has compiled a 10-7 record while holding down the number one position. In doubles play, Kenza Belbacha and Kyla McNicol have put together an 11-2 record in the number two position.
The Conference champion will receive a bid to the NCAA Division I Women's Tennis Championship. The first two rounds of the national tournament are held on campus sites on May 11-12 or May 12-13. The final 16 teams then advance to Athens, Ga., to complete the tournament on May 18-28.
Rice won the 2006 C-USA Women's Tennis Championship, upsetting the field as a No. 7 seed. The Owls knocked off top seed SMU 4-1 in the final to take the championship.
