HOUSTON - Senior Beth Hodge recorded a season-high 20 kills, but the University of Tulsa volleyball team lost 3-0 (21-25, 21-25, 22-25) to Houston Friday evening at the Houston Athletics/Alumni Center.
The Golden Hurricane's record falls to 14-4 on the year and 2-2 in C-USA play, while Houston improves to 8-7 and 1-2 in C-USA.
Hodge led all players with 20 kills with only five errors, and hit .484 for the match. Freshman setter Rachel Vukson recorded 29 assists, while senior libero Malorey Grove had nine digs and junior middle hitter Julia Kenealy added three block assists. As a team, the Hurricane hit .176 with 35 kills, and also had 27 digs and 3.0 blocks. Houston, meanwhile, hit .323 with 45 kills and blocked 10 attacks.
"We are seeing progress in terms of our defensive effort," said Tulsa head coach Ed Allen. "We have a long way to go. Our ability to process what's going on as a team needs to improve. But, I was very pleased with the efforts of Beth Hodge."
In the first set, Tulsa climbed to an early 7-4 lead, but Houston came back with a 13-5 run to take a 17-12 lead it would not lose. TU made it close, when down 23-17, ran off three straight points, but the effort was not enough as the final score was 25-21 in favor of Houston.
The second set, also a 25-21 final, stayed close throughout as Tulsa was bolstered by Hodge's six kills and the team's two blocks. The Hurricane came back from three points down to take the lead at 10-9, but lost it before re-taking the lead at 16-15. Again the team was unable to hold on, and fell in the end.
TU grabbed three quick points to begin the third set, but Houston came back to take the lead for good at 10-9, as Tulsa fought to extend the match to a fourth set. The Golden Hurricane stayed close, until the Cougars pulled away with the score 18-13 and won the set 25-22.
TU next plays on Sunday at Rice at 1 p.m. Admission for all Golden Hurricane volleyball home matches is free. For all Tulsa volleyball news and information, visit www.TulsaHurricane.com.
