Volleyball Plays SMU Sunday on Senior Day

Senior Kelsey Wood, along with Malorey Grove and Beth Hodge, will play their final match at the Donald W. Reynolds Center Sunday at  3 p.m. against SMU.

TULSA, Okla. - The University of Tulsa volleyball team celebrates Senior Day and plays host to SMU in the 2008 regular season finale Sunday at 3 p.m. at the Donald W. Reynolds Center. He match is set to be televised by CBS College Sports on a tape-delay basis, and will be shown Tuesday, Nov. 18 at 6 p.m. CT.

Tulsa will also honor its three seniors prior to the match for their contributions to the program. The seniors on this squad are Kelsey Wood, Malorey Grove and Beth Hodge who transferred for her final year of eligibility to go to graduate school at TU.

The Golden Hurricane stands fifth in the Conference USA standings with its 8-7 C-USA record (21-9 overall), while SMU is ninth in C-USA with a 5-10 mark in the conference and a 13-16 overall record. TU defeated SMU 3-1 on Sept. 16 in Dallas.

The Hurricane averages a .230 attack percentage (1493 kills, 569 errors in 4016 attempts), with 12.87 kills, 11.85 assists and 0.89 aces per set. The Hurricane defense holds opposing teams to a .193 attack percentage and 13.22 kills per set, and averages 14.24 digs and 2.05 blocks per set.

SMU carries a .196 attack percentage (1329 kills, 550 errors in 3974 attempts), with 12.31 kills, 11.31 assists and 0.88 aces per set. On defense, the Mustangs hold opponents to a .210 attack percentage and 13.38 kills per set, and average 15.34 digs and 2.26 blocks per set.

Tulsa trails SMU in the all-time series 10-16, dating back to the 1996 season. The Golden Hurricane defeated the Mustangs 3-1 back on Sept. 16 in Dallas. TU has won six straight against SMU, with its last loss a 3-2 decision at SMU in 2005. Tulsa has won all five matchups with Ed Allen as head coach of the Golden Hurricane. Prior to Allen's arrival, Tulsa had been 3-11 against the Mustangs.

Leaders for Tulsa entering the weekend include junior Jennifer Eichler, who leads the team in kills with 374, and is second in kills per set with 3.22 and leads the way with 422.0 points. Hodge leads the team in kills per set at 3.47, while she also stands second in kills with 333 and has 366.0 points.

Sophomore middle hitter Hannah Stout leads the squad with a .297 attack percentage, and is also third with 2.29 kills per set. Freshman setter Rachel Vukson leads the way with 951 assists on the season for an average of 10.34 per set, and also had 27 service aces on the season.

Defensively, the Hurricane is led by Grove with 418 digs (3.60 dig/s), Wood with 286 digs (2.479 dig/s) and Hodge with 257 digs (2.68 dig/s). Junior Julia Kenealy leads TU in blocks with 10 solo, 102 assists, 112 total blocks and 0.97 blocks per set. Stout is second with 84 total blocks, 76 block assists and is second with eight solo blocks, while Eichler is tied for first with 10 solo blocks, and has 66 block assists and 76 total blocks.
