Tulsa, Oklahoma - The University of Tulsa women's rowing team inked five student-athletes to national letters-of-intent, as announced today by Head Coach Kevin Harris. Hannah Bogan, Allyson Brooks, Megan Fitzpatrick, Meredith Papps, and Puja Sztorc will join the Golden Hurricane for the fall 2009 campaign. All are successful junior rowers and will bring competitive experience to Tulsa.
Bogan is a rower from the Albany Rowing Center in Albany, N.Y. She attended Maple Hill High School in Castleton, N.Y. where she was a center for the varsity volleyball team. In 2008, her Lightweight 2x finished second at the New York State Championships and fourth in the nation at the US Rowing Youth Championships. Hannah will pursue a business major while at TU.
A rower from Moorestown, N.J. and the South Jersey Rowing Club, Brooks attends Moorestown High School where she has also successfully competed in track and field in the pole vault and as a gymnast. Brooks has won medals for the SJRC at the US Rowing Club Nationals in both 2007 and 2008, and most recently finished second in the Quadruple Scull. Brooks will join her sister, Heather Brooks, on the Golden Hurricane squad. Allyson will major in exercise and sports science at Tulsa.
Fitzpatrick comes to Tulsa from Absecon, N.J. where she is an accomplished rower for Holy Spirit High School. In 2008, she helped her team finish in the top three at the Atlantic City Championships, New Jersey State Championships, Philadelphia City Championships, Stotesbury Cup Regatta and the Scholastic National Championships. Additionally, Fitzpatrick is a varsity soccer player for HSHS and plans to study exercise and sports science while at Tulsa.
A rower from the Kingston Rowing Club in Kingston, Ontario, Canada, Papps attends Ernestown High School in Bath, Ontario and also participates in varsity soccer. She has finished in the top two at the Canadian Scholastic National Championships twice. In 2008, Papps rowed to victory in the Junior Women's Double at the Stotesbury Cup Regatta and in the Junior Women's Pair at the Canadian Scholastic Nationals.
Sztorc is a rower from Buffalo, N.Y. and has been a rower for her school program, Nardin Academy, during the scholastic season and at West Side Rowing Club during the summer and fall. She has competed multiple times at the Canadian Scholastic Nationals, US Rowing Youth Nationals and the Canadian Henley. In 2007 and 2008, her crews earned gold medals in the Lightweight 8+ at the Henley, while in 2008, her junior crew finished second at the New York State Championships and fourth at the Canadian Scholastic Nationals. Sztorc will join former West Side teammate Kelsey Kean on the Golden Hurricane squad and intends on studying elementary education.
"I am very happy to have signed these five rowers," said Harris. "It's nice to be attracting quality student-athletes from the Northeast and Canada. I believe that it says a lot about the educational competitiveness of The University of Tulsa, as well as to the positive direction of our rowing program, which is very exciting to me to see these women coming our way. Their contributions will make us better and move us closer to being a consistent championship level team."
