Kansas City, Mo. - Tulsa sophomore Kara Vaughan led the Golden Hurricane with a career-best 14 points, but it wasn't enough as TU fell to UMKC, 61-55, on Wednesday night at the Swinney Recreation Center in Kansas City, Mo. TU dropped to 2-4 on the season, while UMKC moved to 2-4 overall.

Vaughan shot 50-percent from the field, including 2-of-4 from behind the arc, and hit both free throw attempts. She also pulled down six boards, had three assists and a steal. Larrissa Williams, Antoinette Brown and ReShawndra Jackson added nine points apiece, while Williams had a team-best 13 rebounds and two blocks, and Jackson registered a team-leading four steals.

Brown hit a three pointer with just six seconds ticked off the clock to give Tulsa an early lead, but that would be the only lead the Golden Hurricane would have in the game as Chazny Morris hit her first three of the contest nearly a minute later to tie the game. The Kangaroos went on a 9-2 run that spanned the first seven minutes and included a five-minute scoring drought for TU.

Tulsa would battle back to tie the game at 16-all at the 8:26 mark, but four turnovers and four missed baskets later UMKC had an eight-point advantage with just over three minutes to play in the first half. The Kangaroos went into the break with a 30-22 lead.

In the second half, the Kangaroos out-scored Tulsa nearly 2-1 in the first 12 minutes, and climbed to a game-high 17-point lead twice, including 50-33 with 8:13 to play. The Golden Hurricane battled back, went on a 16-5-point run and pulled to within six, 55-49, with just 44 seconds on the clock. Unfortunately, TU ran out of time to overcome the first half deficit.

TU out-scored UMKC, 33-31, in the final 20 minutes and increased their shooting percentage by 10-percent. The Golden Hurricane finished the game shooting 30-percent from the field, 25-percent from behind the arc and a solid 90-percent (10-11) from the line.

The Kangaroos were led by Morris who totaled 21 points, nine rebounds, five assists three blocks and three steals. Kalei Nance also scored in double figures with 13.

The Golden Hurricane will return to action on Saturday, Dec. 6th against Central Arkansas beginning at 5:00 p.m. at the Donald W. Reynolds Center. Fans with a TU-ECU football ticket stub will be admitted free.
