#1 Aurelija Miseviciute (Arkansas)

#1 Aurelija Miseviciute (Arkansas) def. Jenni Heinser (San Francisco), 2-6, 6-3, 6-2
On the match...
"I didn't start off very well. She played well in the beginning and I made a lot of easy mistakes. I didn't really play my game. I was a little nervous because I know that a lot of people have high expectations of me in this tournament. That was the pressure on me and I didn't really follow my game. Then in the second set I just tried to let it go and started over and that worked well. Then at the very end of the third set I was 4-2 up and she had a blister on her hand or something so she didn't really finish that well. That was a good match for the first match, I had a good match."

On playing three sets...
"I was expecting to play a long match because yesterday I talked to my coaches and they were saying every match is going to be hard. It's not going to be easy here because every player in the draw is a good player. It doesn't matter of you are ranked No. 1 or ranked No. 10, you still have to play good tennis. I should have been prepared, but that was the thing, I knew I had to win so I went in and was expecting it to be three sets."

#2 Ani Mijackika (Clemson)

#2 Ani Mijackika (Clemson) def. Anastasia Petukhova (Fresno State), 6-3, 6-1
On the match...
"First matches are always tough. I knew she was a really good player. In the beginning, I was trying to get used to her shots, trying to get used to her game and start looking for a solution. It was good."

On the pressure of being a seeded player...
"I feel a little pressure, but not that much. I just go out there and try to have fun and play my game. I don't think much about what seed I am."

On winning in straight sets...
"That was big. It was pretty nice. It makes it easier to go into the next round if you go in straight sets. It makes it easier every time to go into the next round, especially in the first match. I'm pretty happy about it."

#3 Hilary Barte (Stanford)

#3 Hilary Barte (Stanford) def. Elena Gantcheva (UNLV), 4-6, 6-2. 6-0
On the match...
"I started off a little slow, a little rusty. I haven't played much since we played Baylor because I had a blister. She played pretty tough, didn't miss much and found her rhythm."

On playing three sets...
"I knew it would be tough because she's a tough player and she doesn't give you a lot of free points. It was kind of nice to go three sets and get the feel of everything out there."

On the pressure of being a seeded player...
"Yeah, definitely. Our coach always says pressure is a privilege."

#4 Maria Mosolova (Northwestern)

#4 Maria Mosolova (Northwestern) def. Kelcy McKenna (Arizona St.), 4-6, 6-2, 6-0
On the match...
"That was a very tough match for me. I was down 6-2 and 2-love in the second set, but then I managed to come back. She played really well. I didn't expect her to play that well. It was a great first round for me. It was just a great match to get ready for the next round."

On changing the momentum in the second set...
"I just started competing for every point. Just tried to be tougher than she was, and try to make as many balls as I could to make her play."

"My game obviously got better in the third set. It was a really tough match for me. I still haven't realized why I was down and how come I won."

#5 Marina Cossou (California)

On the match...
"It was a really tough match. She (Zuzana Zemenova) played very well. I was a little bit tired. It was very hard because she played very confident."

Zuzana Zemenova (Baylor)

Zuzana Zemenova (Baylor) def. (5) Marina Cossou (California), 6-4, 6-1
On playing the No. 5 seed and an incentive to win...
"We played Cal in the (team) semifinal and she (Coussou) won the deciding match against my teammate. So I thought there is no way I can lose to her. I knew she was a good player and a fighter. I had to be patient and hit everything as hard as I could. I knew she would be a little tired after having played in the (team) finals yesterday, while I had one day's rest. I knew what I had to do to win the match."

On playing in the first round of the national championship...
"The first round is always tough. You have to be ready to fight. Everybody can play. You just have to play your game and do what you do. You have to be physically tough to play three sets."
