"I think the biggest thing is we're starting to see a good level of consistency over the last two or two-and-a-half weeks," Tulsa Head Coach Ed Allen said. "We have some moments where we break down, but those are for a point or two. We're not seeing that happen as frequently as we did earlier in the year. We expect that to be the case; we're playing four freshmen. They are making some progression physically, but more importantly, in terms of their mental toughness and their ability to process things, they are becoming more comfortable with the game, which is allowing them to play to their potential. We expect that over the next month, we should see more growth there. Physically, we should see a few things in terms of development, but I think the biggest development is going to be from the shoulders up."
Tulsa took a 2-0 lead and made it 4-1 before Memphis came back to tie the score at six apiece. With the score knotted 9-9, the Golden Hurricane pulled away with a 10-4 run to take a 19-13 lead, and coasted to a 25-18 set win.
The Hurricane went out to a 3-1 lead in set two, but Memphis kept it close and briefly took over the lead once in the middle of the set - at 14-13. TU, however, scored two quick points to take over the advantage again, and lead by the largest margin of the set, 23-19, to earn a four-point win, 25-21.
Tulsa came out of the intermission on fire and dominated the third set. The Golden Hurricane hit .682 in the frame, compared to Memphis' -.048, and got a sideout on 10 of 11 opportunities. TU jumped out to a 4-0 lead and extended it to a 12-3 advantage, with the help of five straight kills from Hancock, Eichler and Stout. From that point, Memphis only got within eight points of Tulsa, which extended its lead to 14 points at 23-9, and the 15-point final margin at 25-10.
