Volleyball Hits the Road Again to Play Rice and Houston

Freshman Jordan Clampitt and the Golden Hurricane travel to Houston to play Rice Friday at 7 p.m. and Houston Sunday at 1 p.m.

TULSA, Okla. - When Tulsa and Rice got together last season in Houston, the result was an epic five-set match, which the Golden Hurricane won, 3-2, and totaled 80 kills, 104 digs, both teams had 10 or more blocks and the fourth set featured 72 points - won 37-35 by Rice - in front of a raucous crowd at Autry Court.

The University of Tulsa volleyball team will tangle with Rice Friday at 7 p.m., when it travels to Houston for a two-match Conference USA series this weekend. The Golden Hurricane, having evened its Conference USA record with wins over Marshall and East Carolina last weekend, will move across town Sunday to take on Houston at 1 p.m.

Tulsa (12-5, 2-2 C-USA), is hitting .269 as a team (869 kills-298 errors-2122 attempts), with 869 kills (14.02 k/set), 810 assists (13.06 a/s), 73 service aces, 967 digs (15.60 dig/s) and 123.0 total blocks (1.98 per set).

Rice (12-4, 4-1 C-USA) enters the weekend hitting .239 (851-318-2233) with 851 kills (14.67 k/s), 798 assists (13.76 a/s), 56 service aces, 1044 digs (18.00 dig/s) and 119.0 total blocks (2.05 b/s). Houston (6-14, 3-2 C-USA) enters the weekend with a .173 attack percentage (839-413-2467), 839 kills (11.49 k/s), 778 assists (10.66 a/s), 80 service aces, 1046 digs (14.33 dig/s) and 135.0 total blocks (1.85 b/s).

Tulsa is led by the on the outside by senior Jennifer Eichler, who has 221 kills (4.02 kills per set), a .336 attack percentage, 120 digs, 35 total blocks and 247.5 points for the Hurricane. Freshman Tyler Henderson has 224 kills (4.15 k/s), hits .294, has 17.0 blocks and has scored 233.5 points.

At middle blocker, junior Hannah Stout hits .426 with 139 kills and 44 blocks, while senior Julia Kenealy is hitting .312 with 70 kills, and leads the team with 50 total blocks. Freshman libero Jessica Adams leads the Hurricane with 268 digs (4.87 d/s) and has 10 service aces. Setters Rachel Vukson and Jordan Clampitt have 328 (5.96 a/s) and 324 assists (5.89 a/s), respectively, and Clampitt adds 106 digs.

Rice is led by Ashleigh McCord, who has 182 kills (3.71 k/s), 95 digs, 19 blocks, and Natalie Bogan who hits .374, and has 195 kills (3.36 k/s) and 59 blocks. Meredith Schamun leads the Owls with 676 assists, while Tracey Lam paces Rice and leads C- USA with 5.38 digs per set (312 digs).

Houston is led by Kinsey Cave, who has 269 kills (3.68 k/s), a .222 attack percentage, 104 digs and 25 blocks. Tara Roenicke leads the Cougars with 689 assists (9.44 per set), as well as 41 kills, 153 digs and 31 blocks, while Amanda Carson paces UH with 288 digs (4.00 dig/s).

Tulsa and Rice have played 28 times; Rice leads the series, 19-9. The first meeting came in 1984, a 3-0 Rice win, but 27 of the matches have been played since 1996 when both schools were in the WAC. The two teams split last season with each team winning on the road. Tulsa is 7-1 against Rice since the schools moved to Conference USA. Every match between the Golden Hurricane and the Owls since 2006 has gone the maximum five sets.

Tulsa and Houston have played nine times; Houston leads the series, 6-3. All nine matches have been played since Tulsa joined C-USA in 2005. Houston won all three meeting last year, including in the quarterfinals of the C-USA Championship. The Hurricane's wins came at home in 2005, 2006 and 2007, and TU is 3-1 vs. Houston at home, and 0-4 vs. the Cougars on the road.
