Tulsa, Oklahoma - Taleya Mayberry and Larrissa Williams each netted double-digit points for Tulsa, but it wasn't enough as the Golden Hurricane fell to cross-town rival Oral Roberts, 74-69, in overtime. TU fell to 3-5 on the season, while the Golden Eagles took home the Mayor's Cup with a 7-2 mark on the year.
"We knew we would be in a tough, competitive game with Oral Roberts," Head Coach Charlene Thomas-Swinson said. "We went into it with a game plan to slow them down. We did a very good job of slowing her (Kevi Luper) down. Early on we were able to create opportunities, but they got back into setting a slow-down tempo and we couldn't take care of the basketball. We lost to a very good ORU ball club. I am looking forward to what we have in the upcoming games. If we play like this, we will be a team to be reckoned with in our conference play."
Mayberry scored a game-high and personal-best 22 points, while Williams notched her 33rd career double-double with 18 points and 12 rebounds. Teka Brooks pulled down a game-high 13 boards, while Jermaine Kermis added four assists and Williams had six blocks.
ORU jumped out to an early 8-2 lead, but Tulsa battled back to pull within one with 16:34 on the clock. The Golden Eagles then pulled ahead by seven, 16-9, but TU fought back and tied the contest 18-all with 9:21 to play and maintained the lead throughout the remainder of the first half.
The Golden Hurricane climbed to a nine-point advantage, 39-30, with 16:02 on the clock in the second half, but ORU slowly inched back into it and tied the game 58-58 with 56-seconds remaining in regulation and forced overtime.
Tulsa and Oral Roberts traded baskets in overtime, but the Golden Eagles came out on top with the 74-69 win.
Four Golden Eagles scored in double figures, including 18 each by Kevi Luper and Jaci Bigham, and 14 each by Janae Voelker and Georgia Jones.
Tulsa out-rebounded ORU, 52-38, but the Golden Eagles had 17 steals to TU's nine.
The Golden Hurricane will return to action on Monday, Dec. 28th against Cal State Fullerton. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m. at the Reynolds Center.
