TULSA, Okla. - The University of Tulsa senior volleyball player Jennifer Eichler was named a recipient of the 2009 Fall Conference USA Spirit of Service Award, the league office announced Wednesday.
The C-USA Spirit of Service Award recognizes the community service efforts of the league's student-athletes, based upon significant community service, good academic standing and participation in their elected sport. The fall honorees represent Conference USA's fall sports: football, soccer, volleyball and cross country.
Eichler, the 2009 C-USA Player of the Year, and a member of the AVCA All-Midwest Region Team, is on track to graduate in May with a degree in psychology. She was a member of the 2009 C-USA Commissioner's Honor Roll and is a two-time member of the Tulsa Dean's List, and carries a 3.57 GPA. She plans to pursue a postgraduate degree.
"Jen exemplifies everything we are looking for in a player at Tulsa," Tulsa Head Coach Ed Allen said. "This just proves that she is not only a gifted athlete, but a pretty special person as well."
Her largest community involvement is with Happy Hands, a school for hearing impaired children. At the school, she plays with the kids and signs with them, and also helps the teachers get the students ready for lunch in addition to helping them eat.
Eichler also spends time at EduCare school, where she helps teachers with students in the classroom. She has participated in Shadow a Student-Athlete Day at TU, Shop with a Cop and Relay for Life as well.
On the court, Eichler was also a member of the All-C-USA First Team and C-USA All-Academic Team. She finished the season ranked second in C-USA in total kills (466), fourth in kills per set (3.80 k/s), and third in points per set (4.36 pts/s).
